Neuschwanstein Castle

Built 1869-1886 by King Ludwig II. of Bavaria in the style of a medieval castle
to replace the ruins of Vorder- und Hinterhohenschwangau.

Opening times:

1st April to 30th September 08.30 a.m.-05.30 p.m
1st October to 31st March 10.00 a.m.-04.00 p.m.
1st November, 24th/25th/31st December, 1st January, Shrove Tuesday closed.
Guided tours only.
Duration of guided tour approx. 35 minutes. The tour involves climbing 165 steps
upwards and 181 steps downwards. Foreign language tours can be arranged.
Smoking and the taking of photographs are prohibited in the castle.

Entrance charges:

Adults                                                              12,-- DM
Over 65s, members of German armed forces,
schoolchildren, students and severely handicapped    9,-- DM on production of evidence.
Groups of 20 or more                                               11,-- DM
Children under 6 free,
from 6-14 accompanied by adults free.

Parking:

At the entry to Hohenschwangau village, car parks A, B/C, D.
At the lake Alpsee below Hohenschwangau Castle, car park E;
All the car parks indicated are private car pars and parking fees are therefore payable.

 Access routes:

No. 30   from Hotel Lisl, Alpseestraße/Neuschwansteinstraße (metalled road – closed for motor vehicles), easiest way up. Approx. 25-30 minutes walk.

No. 31  about 50 m beyond car parks A, B/C, D (Alpseestraße) on the left (the path leads into Neuschwansteinstraße), approx. 25-30 minutes

No. 32  through car park D (Cafè Kainz), approx. 20 minutes; Shortest, but steepest way up.

No. 33 through car park D, then path through the Pöllat Gorge; most romantic route. Approx. 35-40 minutes

Routes Nos. 32 and 33 are not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

From the carriage stop at the castle there is still a walk of approx. 5 minutes (about 300 metres) to the castle entrance.

Busses: Private busses run from Hotel Lisl, Neuschwansteinstraße, to the Jugend viewpoint (Marienbrücke - 984 m). From there it is about 10 minutes (600 m) steep downhill walk to the entrance of Neuschwanstein castle. Not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

        Hohenschwangau Castle 

In 1832-1836 Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria had rebuilt the ruined Schwanstein Castle in the neo-gothic style.

No. 18 from Hotel Müller, Alpseestraße (approx. 10 minutes), some steps.

No. 19 Metalled road from Alpsee (car park E), approx. 15-20 minutes (closed to motor traffic), easiest way up.
