Ludwig II wrote in 1878 :
" I think that peoples' happiness
doesn't consist in the number of railways they have.
And the same is true for the future
of Bavaria and Tirol. I don't want anybody to damage the idyllic
loneliness and the romantic nature, whose artistic beauty is much greater in Winter than
during the Summer, through railways and factories. Not only for me, but for innumerable other persons as well, a time is
coming, when they will long for a country and for a spot of the earth where modern culture, technology, avidity and hurry have still left a peaceful place, far from uproar, fry, smoke and dust of the towns ".
